Any spec describe the Backward and Forward Compatibility between 3GPP release version

Hi,
I got one spec TS 32.154 is about for this, but I want to know more detail, for example, If rel9 eNB receive rel10 IE even if that is mandatory from MMEi, any spec to specify how the eNB handle this IE to ensure the operation works normally?
As I known, basically, the new version release should operate backward compatibility, but how about forward compatibility in the old version side?
