Would capacity expansion through spectrum addition need extra base station units ?

Hello,
I have a question on equipment requirements for capacity expansion using additional spectrum. If say an operator is using 3G or 4G base stations with a particular amount of spectrum (say 5MHz for 3G and 20 MHz for LTEi)and then it gets additional spectrum from the regulator (say another 5 MHz for 3G and 10 MHz for LTE). Would it need additional base stations unit on towers to deploy that additional spectrum for capacity expansion or would it just need to add extra cards or software upgrades on existing base stations.
Thanks,
Krish

Regarding the extension for additional spectrum, it mostly depends on vendor equipment. Its possible that there existing HW/SW may already support the additional spectrum or may just require addition card or sw upgrade.
Base station has multiple modules so probably it will not impact base band modules but may require RRH upgrade.
