You may want to rephrase your questions as LTEi pilot signals are called reference signals which are used by the receiver to estimate the amplitude and phase flatness of the received signal.
In DL, RS are used for downlink channel estimation. Exact
sequence derived from cell ID (one of 3 x 168 = 504 pseudo random sequences)
In UL Reference signals (demodulation and sounding)are used for synchronization to the UEi and for UL channel estimation
