Resource Reservation Usage

in LteWorld Forum

Hi, I've read a fair amount on reservation in IMS. Does anyone happen to be aware if this is actually used for current cell phone applications?

As an example VoLTE capable

As an example VoLTE capable terminals are basically using IMS, so they are the ones using the IMS resource reservation mechanism.

3G and LTE

Thanks for the info. Some queries:

1. I recall reading that 3G also has IMS. Would you know if resource reservation is also used in actual 3G nets?

2. I read that IMS has RSVP, yet I also saw the LTEi call set up diagram showing reservation being done as part of SIP signaling rather than by RSVP. Would it be right to say that RSVP is not used in LTE?

Cheers,
Jeremy

1. With HSPA/HSPA+

1. With HSPA/HSPA+ deployments its possible that operators may have UMTS network with IMS core when VoLTE launch takes place. Most of the operators do not have 100% LTE footprint in comparison to there 3G network so it will allow them ability to extend IMS base voice on PS beyond LTE, otherwise it will require SRVCCi.

2) RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocoli) is used by session controllers to request resources from the IP Bearer node, specifying the QoS profilei suitable for the type of session. SIP is used for end to end signalling. They have two separate purpose.

Let me know if I am missing some thing here.
