Alcatel-Lucent wins three awards at LTE North America, recognizing excellence in LTE

in press-release, Alcatel-Lucent, LTE

Paris, November 16, 2010 — Alcatel-Lucent’s (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) leadership in Long Term Evolution (LTE) was recognized by Informa Telecoms and Media, organizers of the LTE world series at the LTE North America 2010 Awards in Dallas with awards in three categories. The company was honored for its work in helping wireless service providers roll out LTE service, for introducing the best network/device testing product of the year, and for the work it is doing to make the technology more environmentally friendly. The specific awards included:

Significant Progress for a Commercial Launch of LTE by a Vendor in the North America Region

Best Network/Device Testing Product for LTE (Alcatel-Lucent 9900 Wireless Network Guardian)

Best Green LTE Product or Initiative in North America (Alcatel-Lucent LTE RAN, Alternative Energy Program and Bell Labs GreenTouch™ initiative)

LTE is a fourth generation wireless technology being developed and deployed to enable high-speed transmission needed for such advanced services as mobile, high-definition TV, video streaming and high-speed data downloads. The LTE North America Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in the LTE industry.

“What is particularly exciting is the range of categories in which we were recognized,” said Ken Wirth, President, 4G LTE Solutions for Alcatel-Lucent.  “As we have always said, LTE is all about end-to-end, and delivering a total value proposition to our customers that goes way beyond the radio network.  I think the diversity of awards we received speaks loudly to the company’s strength as an end-to-end LTE player.”

Alcatel-Lucent was the only company in the awards competition to be shortlisted in six out of nine categories and to receive awards in multiple categories.

The categories in which Alcatel-Lucent won are:

Significant Progress for a Commercial Launch of LTE by a Vendor in the North America Region Recognizes the vendor for excellent in a commercial rollout of LTE in North America, including trials, commitment and investment in LTE development, as well as customer contracts awarded in North America.

Alcatel-Lucent integrates and delivers a true end-to-end LTE solution that will transform the way that consumers communicate, collaborate and interact with other people, businesses and even machines, while enabling service providers to lower their total cost of ownership and unlock new business models.

Having been selected so far by seven customers for commercial deployments and being involved in 58 trials worldwide, Alcatel-Lucent is a market leader in LTE. The company has been awarded commercial contracts (publicly announced) in North America by the early adopters of LTE, including two of the largest operators in the world, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, and is helping evolve from both CDMA and GSM/HSPA technologies to LTE.

Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE solution is already in the field for a large scale commercial launch in 2010 with Verizon Wireless. The company is the unique end-to-end partner of Verizon selected across all strategic areas of their LTE network: Radio Access, Evolved Packet Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), backhaul solution and services. Verizon has picked Alcatel-Lucent for the high quality of its solution that translates into the high quality of service.

AT&T has selected Alcatel-Lucent for its Industry-leading Converged RAN W-CDMA/ LTE base stations, Element Management Systems (EMS), Services, 9900 Wireless Network Guardian and most recently mobile backhaul solution as one of the first awards within the IP/MPLS/Ethernet/Evolved Packet Core Domain. Alcatel-Lucent also is providing professional services for the backhaul network.

Alcatel-Lucent is also supporting both the Verizon Wireless and AT&T Innovations Centers.

Alcatel-Lucent is the end-to-end LTE partner of mobile service providers worldwide with the industry’s most comprehensive solution (combining IP and LTE leadership, IP transformation and integration experience and a rich and open ecosystem of devices, applications and content).

Best Green LTE Product or Initiative in North America (Alcatel-Lucent LTE RAN, Alternative Energy Program and Bell Labs GreenTouch™ initiative)

Recognizes work that is being done to make LTE more environmentally friendly in North America.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Alternative Energy Program is helping service providers quickly and cost-efficiently deploy wireless networks even to areas not served by electrical power, including all climates and geographies.  Over the next two years, Alcatel-Lucent anticipates applying the program to more 100,000 mobile base stations in North America. In addition,Alcatel-Lucent has a strong LTE small cell strategy that enables service providers to reduce the emitted power per site, as well as a converged RAN strategy enabling technologies, including LTE, to run in parallel on the same radio, avoiding heat dissipation, extending life time of the products and reducing waste.  Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, Bell Labs, initiated the launch of GreenTouch™ a global consortium whose goal is to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of communications networks.
