Askey Computer Corporation joins Alcatel-Lucent software licensing program to widen the availability of wireless small cells
Paris, December 3, 2012 - Alcatel-Lucent is to license product software to the Taiwan-based manufacturer of broadband and wireless products, Askey Computer Corporation, to enable their development of products to enhance the quality and speed of 3G broadband services within homes.
As more people use smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices within their homes to make calls, play games and access the Internet, many find service coverage is poor and data connections are slow. This can happen for a number of reasons, including the building structure impeding the signal from a mobile base station, and the physical distance from a radio tower.
To solve these issues, mobile operators are turning to residential small cells – small wireless base stations that can be installed in the home and connect to existing wireline broadband connections – to provide huge improvements in coverage and quality.
Under its software licensing program, Askey Computer Corporation will integrate Alcatel-Lucent’s software for residential small cells into a range of new broadband and wireless products that will be made available to consumers through mobile operators. Consumers using the new products will be able to experience higher data speeds and high-quality ‘five-bar’ service inside their homes.
Robert Lin, Chairman and CEO of Askey Computer Corporation said: “By integrating Alcatel-Lucent’s residential cell software into our broadband portfolio we are able to offer an innovative, more affordable range of products to mobile service providers and consumers directly.”
Mike Schabel, VP of Alcatel-Lucent’s small cell business said: “I am pleased to welcome Askey Computer Corp. into our software licensing program. Network coverage is often cited as a reason for consumers switching service providers, so with more small cells devices in residential use, operators will be able to benefit from the increased customer satisfaction these products provide. Integrating our software into new products for the residential market will enable operators to offer an enhanced mobile broadband experience at a lower cost, while in turn generating new revenue streams.”
