Harris Corporation and Nokia Siemens Networks Demonstrate LTE
MELBOURNE, FL/DFW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, TX, March 3, 2011 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) recently announced that working with Nokia Siemens Networks, it conducted the wireless industry’s first demonstration of push-to-talk (PTT) communication over a Long Term Evolution (LTE) broadband network and a P25 network via Harris VIDA® technology.
Using the existing Harris VIDA P25 network owned by the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Harris and Nokia Siemens Networks integrated a LTE network with Harris’ PTT voice over a P25 system, creating the first fully integrated network to successfully provide PTT voice communications over LTE and P25 networks.
"This demonstration proves that with Harris' LTE solution, powered by VIDA, users can have PTT voice fully integrated with a P25 network, including streaming video and data applications. Broadband, narrowband, public or private, our solution is the only offering that enables it all," said Steve Marschilok, president, Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications. "We’ve proven that push-to-talk over LTE is not only possible, but is a reality today. The combination of PTT voice, video and data on a single, integrated LTE network platform that is interoperable with P25 networks will bring unparalleled wireless functionality via a single comprehensive narrowband and broadband solution for the public safety market."
Using Harris P7300 radios, the demonstration included PTT calls between the LTE and P25 networks while demo technicians drove throughout the area surrounding the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. A wide variety of transmissions successfully roamed between two separate LTE tower sites without an interruption to voice or data service. To demonstrate that PTT communication and high-bandwidth data now can travel simultaneously over an LTE network, technicians accessed data from a panning and zooming video camera located at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, observing various common areas throughout the airport while participants simultaneously made PTT calls over the same network.
Harris VIDA LTE networks are uniquely capable of integrating with existing narrowband public safety communications systems, creating a single unified broadband and narrowband communications solution.
“The Nokia Siemens Networks and Harris teams have debunked the mistaken perception that PTT voice over LTE will not be available for several generations of the broadband standard. It’s real, it works and it’s available today,” said Robert Fennelly, head of Government Business, Nokia Siemens Networks. “This groundbreaking industry-first accomplishment is clear evidence that the capability exists and is ready to be deployed right now, meeting public safety user’s requirements for mission-critical data, video and voice communication.”
