Picochip, Continuous Computing and Ixia Demonstrate LTE Small Cell Integration Milestone

BATH, UK, CALABASAS, Calif, and SAN DIEGO, Calif – JANUARY 18, 2011 — Picochip, Continuous Computing and Ixia have announced that they have successfully collaborated to validate Continuous Computing’s Trillium Long Term Evolution (LTE) and femtocell wireless protocol software solutions running on Picochip’s picoArray hardware using Ixia’s IxCatapult test platform. This three-way collaboration provides a pre-validated platform that significantly accelerates time-to-market for network equipment providers (NEPs) and allows operators and NEPs to solve the difficult challenges of LTE femto, pico and micro cell design and integration with reduced cost and development risk.

Trillium LTE wireless protocol software from Continuous Computing, the global provider of integrated platform solutions that address the mobile broadband capacity challenge, supports LTE femtocells and picocells (Home eNodeB) as well as the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) Mobility Management Entity (MME), Serving Gateway (SWG), Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG) and other EPC elements. These standards-based Trillium LTE wireless protocols allow NEPs and user equipment (UE) manufacturers to rapidly develop LTE core network and access point infrastructure to compete for early design wins in the dynamic LTE marketplace.

The Trillium Home eNodeB solution combines with hardware from Picochip, the leading supplier of technology in the rapidly-growing market for femtocell basestations, in the multi-award-winning PC960x LTE small cell solution. First announced in 2009 and demonstrated live in February 2010, the PC960x is a µTCA-based end-to-end LTE system that gives NEPs and UE providers a strong head start in their product development. Just as importantly, the PC960x delivers a smooth migration path to the development of dual (LTE and HSPA+) and even multi-mode systems in the future.

The IxCatapult test system from Ixia, a leading global provider of converged IP network test solutions, was used to fully validate the functionality and performance of picoArray and Trillum software integration. By emulating LTE UE and generating real-world converged multiplay traffic, the IxCatapult system is able to measure download and upload throughput, latency and voice and video quality. An important market driver for femto, pico and micro cell access points will be improved performance over macro cells; Ixia’s solution validates the readiness of LTE small cell devices to provide high quality services, such as live conversational video.

According to recent research by the Yankee Group, 65 percent of carriers expect to build at least some of their LTE coverage using femtocells ‘from the bottom up’ from late 2012. Applications will include both zones of outdoor femto, pico and micro cells, and building out macro and small cell basestations in parallel, to achieve the most flexible and optimized coverage.
