ZTE Introduces Industry’s First UWB Dual-Mode RRU

in press-release, RRU, TD-SCDMA, ZTE, LTE

August 23, 2011, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced that it has introduced the industry’s first TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE Ultra-Wideband (UWB) dual-mode Remote Radio Unit (RRU) working at a 50MHz bandwidth.

The new RRU can support TD-LTE applications at two 20MHz frequencies in Band E (2320MHz-2370MHz) and TD-SCDMA applications at 10MHz (6-carrier) frequency simultaneously. The RRU supports the transmit power of up to 100 W (50 W x 2 paths), increasing the spectral edge frequency by more than 30 per cent. The introduction of this product is a milestone in the development of UWB dual-mode technologies because it enables customers to build TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE indoor networks at the same time.

TD-LTE is a next-generation technology that evolved from TD-SCDMA. The demand for TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE was taken into consideration with the development of China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network in 2010. According to China Mobile’s plan for frequency bands, Band E is used for indoor coverage only. Currently, it is a common industry practice to design products based on one 20MHz of bandwidth for TD-LTE. Considering the need for future upgrades as well as growth in the user base, ZTE is the first company in the industry to introduce the RRU product that can support TD-LTE working at two 20MHz bandwidths while also supporting TD-SCDMA at the same time. This makes it possible for customers to build their own networks and save on capital expenditure. It is expected that this new product will be widely used in the construction of TD-SCDMA networks in 2011.

Leveraging its strength in innovation and commercialization, ZTE has been leading the development of Time Division Duplex (TDD)technology. It is also a leader in the technological development and system commercialization of TD-LTE. To that end, the company has introduced a series of TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE base stations that are based on the Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform. In addition, the existing network equipment supports a smooth upgrade to TD-LTE.

Meanwhile, ZTE is also promoting TD-LTE commercialization. As of August 2011, the company has built both TD-LTE trials and commercial networks in cooperation with 25 leading global operators in 15 countries around the world. These networks have been distributed in regions including Asia Pacific, the CIS, Europe and Southeast Asia.

The company also deployed the world’s largest integrated LTE TDD/FDD network for commercial use in Sweden, which is also the first commercial TD-LTE network in northern Europe.

In addition, ZTE is also working with chipmakers including QUALCOMM, Innofidei, Sequans and Altair to conduct interoperability tests and to promote the development of the TD-LTE ecosystem.
