Cellular base station architectures are shifting from traditional macrocells to distributed base stations and toward the growing use of small cell base stations. Number of LTE small cells shipments will surpass the number of LTE macrocells as early as 2014, predicts ABI Research. Company estimates that  127,000 LTE small cells would be sold against 113,000 by 2014.

Voice calling over 3G on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices has dropped sharply across mobile networks in the U.S. and is one-fifth of that on previous iPhone models, as users adopt Voice-over LTE (VoLTE) services, reports Newfield Wireless, a Tektronix Communications company and provider of next-generation Radio Access Network (RAN) geoanalytics.

Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel has launched 4G LTE service on mobile. Now Airtel customers in Bengaluru on Apple iPhone 5s or 5c will be able to experience 4G on their mobile at the current 3G prices.

Nokia, T-Mobile and Intel have brought up a 28 GHz outdoor 5G commercial radio system on air in the downtown corridor of Bellevue in Washington state.

Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm achieved 1.07Gbps (gigabits per second) download speeds with commercial silicon and network infrastructure using the Qualcomm SnapdragonTMX20 LTE Modem that supports Category 18 LTE speeds, during an Ericsson lab trial. 

Ericsson has introduced an end-to-end LTE broadcast solution for video delivery in mobile networks to address growing consumer demand for TV Anywhere services. Ericsson will showcase the complete solution at Mobile World Congress 2013 in collaboration with Verizon, Telstra and Qualcomm.

Polish service provider Cyfrowy Polsat has announced completion of LTE testing with Consumers on 31 August 2011. Company expects to provide the commercial LTE service soon.
