Nokia Siemens Networks is in talks to buy Motorola's network equipment business, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Referring to people familiar with the matter, WSJ said a potential deal between Motorola and Nokia Siemens could be reached within the next few weeks and may be worth between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion. NSN and Motorola both have declined comment on the report.

Last year, Nokia Siemens Networks tried to buy Nortel's CDMA and LTE networks businesses in US$650 million but Ericsson ended up winning the assets with a $1.13 billion bid.

Motorola is splitting into two units: one comprising phones and set-top boxes, and the other its communications and network equipment business.

However acquisition of Motorola's network assets is questionable as these are mainly based on the GSM standards similar to NSN. 

Motorola  has strong position in the U.S. and a good client base here. Nokia Siemens might be looking to grow its base in USA market through this buy.
