Tata Elxsi extends its LTE Software Portfolio for Cavium Networks OCTEON II Processors

in press-release, Cavium, Tata Elxsi, LTE

Chicago / Bangalore, October 18, 2010: Tata Elxsi Ltd, a leading embedded product design company and part of the $70 billion Tata group, today announced the availability of its LTE software portfolio on the latest Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM) OCTEON II processor family. This offers smooth migration and natural evolution for the existing solution which is currently available on Cavium OCTEON Plus CN58XX platforms.

Tata Elxsi’s LTE eNodeB protocol stack with a proven and highly-scalable architecture provides two variants, for high capacity macro and micro base stations and low capacity pico and femtocells. This combination of Tata Elxsi's LTE software stacks and Cavium’s OCTEON II multi-core processor family, boasts 1 to 32 cnMIPS64® cores with market-leading performance and advanced hardware acceleration. It offers equipment vendors an optimized multi-variant solution which scales from femto to macro. Customers also benefit from Tata Elxsi’s full system development expertise, which provides cost benefits and time-to-market advantages. Various features like hardware-software partitioning and interface definition facilitate easy optimization for multi-core operations and best utilization of platform hardware acceleration.

Tata Elxsi's state-of-the-art solution is designed with flexible SAP-based interfaces, allowing easy integration of third party components and product differentiator algorithms. The entire software stack has been architected in a highly modular fashion to offer flexibility to OEMs to make modifications to specific layers of the stack with ease, if required. The package also includes updates and upgrades to support newer platforms and advanced releases like Release 9 and beyond.

The Tata Elxsi LTE eNodeB stack has been proven against standards compliant PHY implementation developed by TEL based on leading DSPs and well tested against third party UEs. With over two decades of experience in product design and telecom engineering, Tata Elxsi provides unparalleled expertise in the development of LTE products for equipment manufacturers.

“We are pleased to announce the availability of our LTE solutions on the latest Octeon II multi-core processor family. This shows our commitment to support our customers with feature enhancements and platform updates as part of the product roadmap. Customers can leverage Tata Elxsi software, services and integration expertise to enable early product deployment into the rapidly growing LTE market” said Mr. Nitin Pai, Vice President, Marketing, Tata Elxsi Ltd.”

“It is exciting to have a common platform 4G solution that addresses both the LTE and WiMAX markets using the Tata Elxsi software and the Cavium OCTEON processor platforms. OCTEON processors have been chosen by 6 out of top 8 Wireless Telecom Equipment Manufacturers.  Tata’s software will enable our joint customers to deploy 4G wireless in a very time-effective manner” said YJ Kim, Senior Director, Embedded Processor Group, Cavium Networks.”

The Cavium Networks OCTEON multi-core MIPS64 family of processors provides the industry’s most advanced hardware accelerators for key LTE functions such as packet processing, compression, security (IPsec, KASUMI, SNOW 3G), DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) and quality of service.

Tata Elxsi LTE stack

In our experience with OCTEON-II, the new cpu is performing at many multiples of throughputs higher, compared to prev generation. The one that we worked with recently is a 6 core CPU CN6335, vs the older 16 core CPU. There are clearly superior design choices made for the internal architecture. We ran the IPv4 forwarding tests and web-bench reports to compare. Our customers plan to use the OCTEON-II for traffic generators, Deep Packeti inspection, Regex acceleartion etc.
