UK 4G spectrum auction likely next year
UK’s 4G spectrum might be up for auction mid next year according to Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Last week Vaizey, UK’s Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, in a written answer said that the Government would make a decision on 4G for the UK before Parliament’s summer recess on the 29th July.
However this was not accurate according to BIS, BIS spokesperson told ZDNet UK that we can expect a decision by the beginning of summer recess.
The spectrum that will go up for auction is a 72MHz wide slice in the 800MHz band and a 190MHz wide slice in 2.6GHz band.
Quoting industry sources ZDNet reports that Vaizey is unlikely to lay down a new SI and will pick up an existing SI brought in by the Labour government, which will make commitments for the 4G spectrum auction.
