Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it has inked a four-year Carrier Ethernet project with Taiwanese operator Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) for its IP network transformation.

Telco plans to converge its current metro network and IP/MPLS-based Carrier Ethernet infrastructure. The unified network infrastructure will enable FET to pursue a quick mobile traffic expansion in its 3G network and offer advanced services to businesses with improved scalability and quality of service (QoS). Meanwhile, FET can also lay a foundation for future introduction of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.

“While IP video, multimedia, and other high-bandwidth applications become increasingly popular, they require an all-IP multi-service infrastructure to satisfy the market’s growing needs for converged services with speed and bandwidth,” said Jeffey Gee, CTO of Far EasTone and president of New Century InfoComm.

In April, China Mobile had signed a deal with Taiwanese operator Far EasTone to jointly develop a next generation TD-LTE mobile network in Taiwan for testing purposes.
