Hungary Awards New Broadband Frequencies to Four Operators
National Media and Infocommunications Authority of Hungary (NMHH) has announced the names of the companies that have won frequencies for broadband services. The four winners offered a total of HUF 130.6 billion for the use of the 800 and 2600 MHz frequencies not yet available for mobile data traffic and the 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies unallocated so far.
The NMHH published the tender documentation for the use of the 800, 900, 1800 and 2600 MHz frequencies on 22 May 2014. By the deadline of 16 June Digi Távközlési és Szolgáltató Kft., Magyar Telekom Nyrt., Telenor Magyarország Zrt. and Vodafone Magyarország Zrt. had submitted their applications.
Magyar Telekom Nyrt. won 801-811/842-852 MHz; 882.1-884.1/927.1-929.1 MHz; and 2500-2530/2620-2650 MHz in HUF 33.225 billion. In addition, operator won 1730-1735/1825-1830 MHz and 1735-1740/1830-1835 MHz blocks in HUF 15 billion and HUF 10.425 billion respectively.
Vodafone Magyarország Zrt. won 791-801/832-842 MHz; 884.1-885.1/929.1-930.1 MHz; and 2575-2600 MHz in HUF 27.225 billion. It also got 2530-2550/2650-2670 MHz block in HUF 3 billion.
Telenor Magyarország Zrt acquired 811-821/852-862 MHz; 880.1-882.1/925.1-927.1 MHz; 2550-2570/2670-2690 MHz frequency blocks in HUF 31.725 billion. Whereas DIGI Távközlési és Szolgáltató Kft. won 1725-1730/1820-1825 MHz frequencies in HUF 10 billion.
In addition to the existing three mobile networks, Digi will start to develop a new, fourth network. The new entrant will need about one and a half years to build up its network. Operators earned the right to use the frequencies until 2034.
