LTE Broadcast/LTE Multicast Market Status Overview
LTE broadcast is one of the key new features of 3GPP LTE Release 9 specifications known as evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS), which supports all specified bandwidths and formats of LTE, including FDD and TDD modes and LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation. This technology enables multiple users to receive same content simultaneously.
LTE broadcast technology evolves new business models in the field of Live event streaming, Real time TV streaming/mobile TV, Video on demand services, Multi music services, Newsfeeds, Radio station streaming, Media delivery (Off peak), Advertising, Push to Talk, Connected vehicles, Location based services, Public safety/emergency alerts, Fixed wireless to Quad Play conversion/Home TV, Internet of things etc.
According to GSA at least 19 mobile network operators in Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, The Netherlands, The Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, UAE, UK and the USA, working with LTE systems providers and broadcast content owners, are deploying, trialling or studying LTE Broadcast technology and eMBMS support will be embedded in all smart phones, looking the mobile data traffic on networks, driven mainly by video which accounted for about 40% of mobile data traffic in 2013 and suggest a rise to 66-70% by 2017.
In January 2014 the first LTE Broadcast service was commercially launched by KT in South Korea. In Further development ATIS announced release on its new standard Multicast delivery of content to mobile end user devices (ATIS0200011).The Samsung Note 3 smart phone has been used for receiving multicast content with chipset support from Qualcomm Technologies Inc. LTE Broadcast functionality is supported across Qualcomm Snapdragon tiers and Qualcomm Gobi TM LTE modems. China Telecom made available 18000 eMBMS-enabled Huawei C8817 smart phones. Qualcomm announced general availability of its LTE broadcast software development kit (SDK) on 18th September 2014.
