Mobily and STC announce commercial LTE service in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabian telcos Mobily and STC have launched LTE services in the country. However, both operators claim to be the first operator in the MENA region to commercially launch LTE network.
Yesterday, Etihad Etisalat Mobily announced the launch of its LTE network with first phase covering the cities of Najran, Jazan, Al Kharj, Ras tanoura, Algurayat and Aldudamy. operator plans to extend coverage to Hail, Al Baha, Al Mujamaaa and Wadi Al Dawasir within the next fortnight.
STC made announcement of commercial LTE network launch today. Operator has adopted this technology in the beginning of 2010 and announced the successful completion of the testing period making it the choice for next generation of mobile telecommunications. Company Plans to cover 400 locations during the first phase of the launch.
Earlier this year Mobily had awarded two contracts worth SAR 450 million ($ 120 million) for the construction and rollout of its LTE infrastructure in several of cities and regions in the Kingdom. Mobily signed the contract with the Samsung and Huawei for the commissioning of its networks in 30 plus cities and an upgrade of Bayanat Al Oula’s existing WiMAX infrastructure.
