Qualcomm raring to go in tech arena

September 6, 2009 | Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs talked about smart books, company's future, rivalry with Intel when he sat down with San Diego Union-Tribune  reporters and editors recently.

Jacobs said that Qualcomm has fewer patents in LTE, but they are essential to the technology. It has negotiated LTE royalty rates of 3.25 percent with two major handset makers and is in talks with a third. Once complete, those three licenses will cover most of the handsets made in the world.

Further on transition to 3G Jacobs said, “The big growth driver is the 2G-to-3G transition, and that is moving along well. There are 830 million 3G subscribers in the world as of the end of June. So the question about whether 3G is important, I think, is gone, especially with things like the iPhone. 3G is sort of a mainstream thing.
