Elisa Launches Commercial 5G Network in Finland
Finnish operator Elisa has announced the launch of commercial 5G network and has started selling 5G subscriptions. The company has started 5G services in Tampere and Tallinn. The operator is claiming to be the first operator to launch 5G services across the globe. The 5G network was used for the first time to make a video call to Kadri Simson, Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure in Estonia.
Elisa aims to make Finland the leading nation as a developer of 5G mobile services. The Ministry of Communications is ready to allocate the first 5G licenses to the 3,400–3,800 megahertz frequency band in autumn, which will make Finland among the first countries in the world to start building 5G networks, says Anne Berner, Minister of Transport and Communications.
Elisa, together with Huawei, used the commercial 5G terminal devices to make the call. The operator has also been updating its networks to be 5G-ready across Finland, and this work continues.
Last month Elisa announced to start building a 5G-ready network in Jyväskylä in June and it will be finished by the end of August. Jyväskylä will be the third city in Finland to have this extensive modern network.
