Nokia Siemens Networks and National Chiao Tung University to collaborate on live TD-LTE calls
April 9, 2010 - In a bid to bring high-speed mobile broadband experience to Taiwan, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) and Nokia Siemens Networks are conducting the first trials in the region of the time division (TD) variant of Long Term Evolution (LTE). The trial will provide valuable experience of next-generation mobile broadband technology.
Nokia Siemens Networks will support NCTU in building a TD-LTE trial network. The trial will commence in May, ushering in a lively mobile broadband experience. TD-LTE is a major variant of next-generation mobile broadband technology relevant for operators having access to time division duplexing (TDD) spectrum.
Chung-Yu Wu, the president of NCTU, said: “This multilateral cooperation in TD-LTE will bring forward research on cutting-edge technologies and drive the development of mobile broadband in Taiwan. This trial network is also a perfect example of how industry-university partnerships can nurture new technology. China Mobile will bring its operational experience and application support to the trial, Nokia Siemens Networks will contribute its leading technologies and products, and NCTU will take advantage of this research program to help Taiwanese companies develop LTE devices.â€
Nokia Siemens Networks has committed to provide all necessary TD-LTE equipment for the trial, including core network and base stations, as well as corresponding technical support to help NCTU in its research.
“This initiative will facilitate a new wave of advanced mobile broadband services in Taiwan,†said Mike Wang, general manager for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our existing 3G leadership in the country gives us the required edge in helping operators and institutions to further develop Taiwan’s telecommunications industry.â€
The two parties have established a mechanism for cooperation and communication in the international standardization of LTE Advanced, and will conduct periodic exchanges of information regarding the trial network and innovative application services.
