Telefonica O2 Germany plans to launch two urban LTE networks in Munich and Halle by the end of 2010. Company is using 2.6 GHz spectrum in these areas.

Company also has planned pilot LTE networks in the rural suburbs Ebersberg east of Munich and Teutschenthal western of Halle using so-called digital dividend spectrum 800 MHz.

"Our goal is to offer this new technology to our customers nationwide as soon as possible. We are working closely together with network equipment suppliers and equipment manufacturers and use the global know-how from Telefonica," said Rene Schuster, CEO of Telefonica O2 Germany.

Network equipments in Munich and Halle are being supplied by Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks.

Telefonica O2 had secured two 10 megahertz blocks in the 800 MHz band in Germany's mobile spectrum auction which ended in May. Telefonica paid EUR1.4 billion for 11 blocks in the auction including four blocks around 2.6 GHz.
